Nuh Mewati Folk Music Raga Tradition
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
The Mewati gharana of classical music, associated with the Meo Muslim community of Mewat (Nuh district), is a revered Hindustani classical vocal tradition that produced the legendary Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan whose recordings of ragas like Yaman and Bhairav are canonical in classical music pedagogy. The Mewati gharana style is known for its slow, meditative alap exposition, clear diction, and deep emotional expression rooted in the Sufi devotional context. The Spic Macay and Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav festivals regularly invite Mewati gharana performers; the tradition survives through a small number of hereditary and institutional students.
