Gond Tribal Medicine and Mahua Plant Knowledge of Nizamabad
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Gond tribal community of Nizamabad's forested northern parts maintain a traditional medicine system centred on forest plants. Mahua (Madhuca longifolia) — the dominant flowering tree — provides a seed oil used medicinally as a skin emollient and hair tonic. Gond healers use Terminalia arjuna bark for cardiac conditions, Andrographis paniculata for fevers, and Tinospora cordifolia for liver health. The community's seasonal knowledge of when plants contain maximum active compounds optimises the medicinal value of harvest. ITDA Nizamabad has supported documentation of Gond medicinal knowledge.
