Naga Morung Community House Woodcarving Nagaland Tribal

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Morung is the traditional tribal community house of Naga peoples, serving as a dormitory for young men, a community war council hall, and a repository of tribal memory. Naga morungs are elaborately carved with mythological scenes, tiger heads, hornbill crests, and clan totems in dense relief woodcarving using dao (machete). Each Naga tribe has distinctive carving styles — Angami morungs show human head motifs from headhunting traditions, Ao morungs feature rice granary motifs, and Konyak morungs display carved human figures. The Kisama Heritage Village near Kohima preserves replica morungs of all major tribes for the Hornbill Festival. Naga woodcarving cooperatives now produce morung-style carved panels, furniture, and totems for institutional buyers and galleries.
