Mysuru Pure Silk Saree Weaving and Karnataka Silk Industries

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Mysuru silk sarees are among the most prestigious handwoven textiles in India, produced by Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) weavers and private cooperative weavers in Mysuru. The characteristic Mysuru saree uses pure mulberry silk in a twill or crepe weave body with a broad pure zari (gold or silver thread) border and pallav (end piece). The silk used is a high-quality 2-ply twisted yarn from Ramanagara district's reeling units, wound on to bobbins and set on jacquard-fitted handlooms. The preparation of the loom for a single saree — threading 7,000–9,000 warp threads through the heddles — takes a full day. KSIC's Mysuru Silk Factory, established in 1912, provides government-assured quality certification and markets through Cauvery emporiums across India.
