Morbi Ceramic Vitrified Tile Cluster Gujarat
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Morbi in Saurashtra Gujarat is the globe second-largest ceramic tile producing cluster after Sassuolo in Italy, manufacturing over 80 percent of India ceramic floor and wall tile output from more than 700 factories. The cluster produces glazed, vitrified, and porcelain tiles in every size from mosaic to large-format slabs for domestic construction markets and export to Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Cooperative raw material procurement of kaolin, feldspar, and silica sand from Rajasthan and Gujarat quarries supplies the Morbi tile factories. After a devastating factory roof collapse in 2022, cooperative factory safety councils implemented structural audit requirements across the cluster. The Morbi cluster employs over 500,000 workers including significant migrant labour from Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Cooperative skill training centres have introduced computer-aided tile design and kiln automation courses for cluster workers.
