Mon Konyak Naga Tattoo Headhunter Cooperative Nagaland

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Mon in the Mon district of Nagaland is the homeland of the Konyak Naga tribe, traditionally the most feared headhunting warriors of the Naga hills who marked hunting kills with elaborate facial and body tattoos. The last generation of tattooed Konyak elders who received their facial tattoos as warriors now live in Mon villages including Longwa and Shangnyu and have become one of India most sought-after documentary photography subjects. The Konyak community has formed cooperative tourism societies to manage responsible cultural tourism and provide dignified livelihood opportunities for elder village members as cultural guides. Konyak blacksmithing producing shotgun barrels, machetes, and decorative weapons from local iron ore — a traditional craft of extraordinary skill — is maintained by cooperative blacksmith workshops in Longwa. The Konyak tribal council governs the Mon district through traditional gaonbura village head authority structures that intersect with cooperative governance.
