Saaru Avalakki — Beaten Rice Breakfast Tradition of Mandya

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Saaru Avalakki (spiced beaten rice flakes) is the characteristic breakfast of Mandya district's farming communities — made from thick beaten rice (avalakki/poha) soaked in water until tender, then mixed with freshly prepared tamarind-based spice paste (saaru) containing roasted groundnuts, dry coconut, red chilli, and jaggery. The resulting dish is eaten at room temperature — a practical breakfast for farmers who need to reach their fields early. Fresh coconut grated over the top is the finishing touch. Mandya's version of avalakki differs from the dry beaten rice dishes of North Karnataka by the wet tamarind saaru preparation, which gives it a tangy, complex flavour. The dish is also prepared as a temple prasadam offering in Mandya's numerous village temples.
