Lakshadweep Coconut Coir Kalava Palm Leaf Weaving

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Lakshadweep Island artisans produce kalava sacred coir rope and intricately plaited coconut-palm leaf baskets using atoll-specific patterns known only to island cooperative members. Kadmat, Amini, and Agatti Island women cooperative members weave finely plaited prayer mats, storage baskets, and decorative room dividers from green coconut frond using a technique that takes ten years to master at a professional level. The coir cooperative also processes coconut husk fibre into premium mattress rope and long-fibre bristle coir exported to Gulf furniture makers and European mattress manufacturers. Kalava coir rope holds sacred significance in Hindu puja tradition and is supplied in bulk to temple and pilgrimage centres on the Kerala mainland, particularly during festival season. Lakshadweep Administration cooperative training centres teach traditional plaiting patterns to younger island women to prevent knowledge loss.
