Kodagu (Coorg) district is Karnataka's — and one of India's — premier coffee growing regions, where over 100,000 hectares of shade-grown Arabica and Robusta coffee estates on the Western Ghats slopes (900-1500 metres) produce high-quality coffee under the Kodagu brand recognised in premium specialty coffee markets worldwide. Kodagu coffee estates — typically family-owned 3-30 hectare plots — also intercrop black pepper, cardamom, vanilla, and orange on the same land, making Kodagu's agricultural landscape one of India's most diverse single-crop agroforestry systems. The Kodava community, Kodagu's indigenous people, practise a unique martial tradition including the Kailpoday (gun festival) and the Kodava Takk language, and their food tradition of pandi curry (pork with Coorg vinegar kachampuli) and kadambuttu (rice ball) is among the most distinctive in south India.
