Kapurthala Kasera Black Pottery Traditional
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Pottery-making communities in Kapurthala's market towns produce black-fired terracotta vessels including water pots, flower vases, and ritual items that are kiln-fired at reducing atmosphere to achieve the characteristic black finish. Kapurthala's potters source local clay from Beas riverbanks, wheel-throw their wares, and fire them in underground pit kilns covered with wood ash and cow dung that starve the fire of oxygen. The black pottery tradition of Punjab is distinct from the slip-glazed and painted styles of Rajasthan and is sold at religious sites and craft bazaars in Kapurthala, Jalandhar, and Amritsar.
