Kanyakumari Coconut Shell Craft of Tamil Nadu

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Kanyakumari district at the southern tip of Tamil Nadu and India has developed a distinctive craft of coconut shell polishing, carving, and lacquering into decorative items and functional kitchenware. The craft uses the thick shells of the tall coconut varieties grown along the Kanyakumari coast. Artisans cut shells into bowls, spoons, cups, buttons, and decorative wall pieces. The polishing technique reveals the natural brown-black wood grain of the coconut shell. Some pieces are lacquered in natural or chemical finishes; others are carved with floral or geometric motifs. Kanyakumari coconut shell craft cooperatives employ mostly women. Products are sold through the Kanyakumari tourism retail market and exported to eco-product buyers in Japan, Germany, and the USA. The craft has environmental credentials — coconut shells are an agricultural waste product. NABARD and state horticulture department provide training and market linkage support.
