Kancheepuram Silk Saree Zari Temple Weaving Tradition
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Kancheepuram (Kanchipuram) district near Chennai is India's silk saree capital, producing the Kancheepuram silk sari — a heavy multi-layered mulberry silk fabric with a solid-colour body and contrasting zari (gold/silver thread) border and pallu (end) woven as a separate unit joined at the join point by a distinctive interlocking thread technique (korvai) that makes the Kancheepuram sari structurally distinct from other silk saris. Kancheepuram silk has GI status; authentic Kancheepuram silk uses 100% mulberry silk with real zari (silver and gold wrapped thread) and is tested for silk content purity, with fake polyester imitations flooding the market. The district is also one of Tamil Nadu's most important religious centres — Kanchi is one of India's seven sacred cities, and the Ekambareshwara temple (Earth linga), Varadaraja Perumal, and Kamakshi Amman temples are among Tamil Nadu's architecturally magnificent Dravidian temples.
