Joha Scented Aromatic Rice Kamrup Assam

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Joha rice is a group of aromatic short-grain rice varieties traditional to Assam's Brahmaputra valley — the Assam equivalent of basmati in the northern plains but with a distinctly different aroma profile: where basmati has the 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline compound responsible for its popcorn scent, Joha rices in different sub-varieties have nutty, floral, or herbal aromatic notes. Important Joha varieties include Kola Joha (dark-husked, intense fragrance), Bogi Joha (sweet aroma), Kapili Joha (from Nagaon's Kapili river valley, festival-grade), and Joha Begun Bichi (named for its eggplant-seed shape). Joha rice is used for preparation of payasam (rice pudding), Pitha (rice cake), and special pulaos served at Bihu festival, sattra ceremonies, and weddings. The rice grows at lower yield than modern high-yielding varieties and is cultivated primarily on fertile riverine alluvial soils in Kamrup, Nagaon, and Morigaon districts with single crop kharif season. Farmers maintain their own seed stocks of preferred Joha varieties through season-to-season selection — a practice that preserves genetic diversity at farm level. Assam Agricultural University maintains a collection of over 400 Joha landraces at its seed bank. Joha rice commands a 5 to 8 times premium above ordinary rice in Guwahati premium retail and export to Assamese diaspora. GI tag secured in 2014. State-supported Joha brand packaging developed for tourism and premium retail. Training in seed purity maintenance and organic Joha cultivation for premium export certification.
