Jhansi district in the Bundelkhand region is the site of the famous 1857 Battle of Jhansi where Rani Laxmibai — the "Manikarnika" of Maratha tradition — defended Jhansi Fort against the British East India Company forces before her death on the battlefield. Jhansi Fort on a rocky granite outcrop is one of central India's most powerful fortresses, and the rani's story continues to inspire school curriculum and popular culture nationwide. Bundelkhand's granite-basalt terrain supports oilseed cultivation of mustard, linseed, and tilli (sesame) on its thin poor soils, and the region has traditionally suffered from water scarcity and drought affecting rainfed agriculture.
