Jalna: India's Hybrid Seed Capital

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Jalna district has earned the title of India's Hybrid Seed Capital, with over 200 seed companies (large, medium, and small) headquartered in Jalna or operating major production facilities in the district. The seed industry in Jalna produces hybrid cotton, vegetables, cereals, and oilseed seeds sold across India and exported to Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Seed production relies on the specific isolation requirements of hybrid seed production: fields growing parent lines must be isolated by distance to prevent cross-pollination, and the black cotton soil and reliable irrigation of Jalna's command area suit the controlled production environment needed. The seed industry employs thousands of women workers for detasseling (removing male flowers from maize parent plants) and other precision operations. Jalna's seed companies have contributed to Maharashtra's agricultural transformation but have also faced controversies over genetic uniformity, farmer dependency, and royalty structures.
