Bagheli Folk Music and Rai Dance Tradition of Jabalpur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Jabalpur is a cultural hub of the Baghelkhand region where Bagheli folk music and Rai dance flourish. Rai is performed by Bedia women who are traditional artist-community members: fast footwork, twirling skirts, and improvised call-and-response with dholak players mark the style. The dholak anchors a percussion ensemble that includes manjira and sometimes the instrument called nagara. Bagheli geet — seasonal folk songs — are sung at sowing, harvesting, weddings, and the Narmada pilgrimage circuit. Songs for Narmada Jayanti are chanted in procession from the ghats. Local music academies have documented hundreds of Bagheli compositions that blend Sanskrit devotional idioms with rustic Awadhi-Bagheli vernacular. Urban migration has not erased these forms; they are performed at melas across Madhya Pradesh.
