Moov Arisi — Bamboo Rice of Idukki Tribal Communities
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Moov Arisi, or bamboo rice, is a rare forest food harvested by tribal communities in Idukki when bamboo plants flower and seed before dying — an event that occurs once every 40 to 60 years for certain species. The seeds, which resemble elongated rice grains, are collected from the forest floor, cleaned, and cooked as porridge or ground into flour for flatbreads. Tribal knowledge identifies the safe window for harvest and the proper cleaning process to remove any bitter compounds. Bamboo rice is believed to have exceptional nutritional properties and is used in traditional medicine for joint pain and fever. It has gained commercial interest among health food retailers, though sustainable harvesting protocols remain controlled by community elders.
