Kalka-Shimla Narrow Gauge Railway Heritage Solan District

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge railway passing through Solan district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an extraordinary feat of engineering completed in 1903 climbing from 656 metres at Kalka to 2076 metres at Shimla through 102 tunnels, 864 bridges, and numerous loops. The railway passes through Solan district's hills creating a journey through spectacular mountain scenery. Traditional knowledge of mountain terrain, rock types, and drainage patterns informed the engineering decisions of the original construction. The railway continues to operate carrying passengers through the scenic route. Station buildings along the route including Solan station are heritage structures with Victorian railway architecture adapted to mountain conditions. The railway represents the intersection of colonial engineering ambition and the natural landscape.
