Mandi Town Ancient Temples: 17th Century Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Mandi town on the Beas river is called the Varanasi of the Hills for its exceptionally high concentration of ancient temples with over 80 temples documented in and around the town. The Trilokinath, Panchvaktra, and Ardh Narishvara temples represent the finest stone temple architecture in Mandi district. The temples were built under patronage of the Mandi rajas between the 16th and 18th centuries displaying mature Nagara style with intricate stone carvings. Mandi stone carvers developed a regional style of sculpture that influenced temple art across the Western Himalayas. Temple inscriptions provide historical records of patronage, artists, and dates of construction. The annual Shivratri fair centred on these temples maintains their living devotional function alongside their heritage significance.
