High-Altitude Medicinal Herbs and Traditional Medicine Lahaul Spiti
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The high-altitude ecosystems of Lahaul and Spiti harbour rare medicinal plants with exceptional potency due to extreme UV radiation, cold temperatures, and mineral-rich soils. Species like Kuth (Saussurea lappa), Zandu (Tibetan medicinal herb), Atis (Aconitum heterophyllum), and various other alpine medicinal plants with significant commercial and pharmaceutical value grow in remote areas accessed only by traditional collectors with intimate knowledge of habitat locations and harvesting seasons. Traditional Amchi medicine (Tibetan traditional medicine) practitioners in Spiti use a pharmacopeia of local and imported Tibetan medicinal plants to treat community health needs. The Amchi system combines sophisticated plant knowledge with diagnostic practices and treatment protocols transmitted through traditional medical lineages. Documentation of Amchi knowledge represents an urgent conservation priority.
