Kinner Kailash Sacred Mountain Heritage Kinnaur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Kinner Kailash (6050m) in Kinnaur district is one of Himachal Pradesh's sacred peaks believed to be the winter abode of Lord Shiva. The annual parikrama (circumambulation) of Kinner Kailash undertaken by pilgrims in July-August is one of India's most challenging high-altitude treks covering over 80 km at altitudes above 4500 metres. Traditional knowledge of the route, seasonal conditions, altitude acclimatisation, and emergency procedures is maintained by experienced guides from Kinnaur villages. The trek passes through diverse ecological zones from orchards to alpine meadows to glaciated terrain offering a complete Himalayan ecosystem experience. Local Kinnauri community knowledge of sacred sites, medicinal plants, and mountain ecology along the parikrama route enriches the pilgrimage experience.
