Masrur Rock-Cut Temples: Himachal's Ellora Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Masrur temple complex in Kangra district carved directly from a single rocky outcrop in the early 8th century represents the only example of rock-cut temples in the Western Himalayas. The complex of 15 shikhara-topped shrines carved from the reddish sandstone ridge bears formal similarities to the rock-cut tradition at Ellora in Maharashtra. Sculpture panels depicting Nataraja, Mahishasuramardini, Vishnu, and celestial beings show exceptional artistry. The temples were partially damaged by an 18th century earthquake adding a poignant ruined quality to the site. Archaeological Survey of India maintains the UNESCO tentative list monument. The surrounding Himalayan landscape with views of Dhauladhar range creates a setting of unusual beauty for this ancient monument.
