Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bir Billing in Kangra district hosts the World Paragliding Championship and is considered the world's finest paragliding site with the launch site at Billing (2400m) and landing zone at Bir (1400m) providing ideal thermal conditions in a spectacular Himalayan setting. The Tibetan settlement at Bir maintains active monasteries and craft traditions similar to Dharamsala. Traditional knowledge of wind patterns, thermal development, and landing site assessment accumulated by local pilots reflects deep understanding of the Kangra valley's microclimate. The paragliding economy has created livelihoods for hundreds of local youth as pilots, instructors, and support staff. The coexistence of cutting-edge aviation sport and ancient Buddhist monastic life at Bir creates an unusual cultural combination attracting diverse visitors to this Kangra valley location.
