Wild Berry Collection and Commercial Horticulture Bilaspur
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bilaspur district's forests support wild berry populations including Indian gooseberry (Amla), wild raspberry, wild strawberry, and Kafal (Myrica esculenta) which are collected by local communities for food and medicine. Commercial cultivation of exotic berries including Strawberry and Blueberry at appropriate altitude sites has been introduced through horticulture department programs. Traditional knowledge of wild berry locations, harvest timing, and preservation methods is maintained by forest-dependent communities. Amla is particularly valued for its exceptional vitamin C content and use in Ayurvedic preparations including Chyawanprash and Amla juice. Village women process collected Amla into pickles, candy, and dried products for local markets. This forest-to-product value chain provides income while maintaining community connections to forest ecosystems.
