Gondi Painting Tribal Art Dindori Chhattisgarh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Gondi painting is a vibrant tribal art tradition practiced by the Gond communities of Dindori, Mandla, and Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Using natural pigments derived from charcoal, cowdung, chalk, and colored earth, Gond artists fill detailed fish-scale or dot-pattern textures called bison-horn design onto their paintings of deities, trees, animals, and mythological narratives. The paintings traditionally adorned the interior walls of Gond homes during festivals and are now produced on canvas and paper for the national craft market. Prominent Gond artists like Jangarh Singh Shyam brought the style international recognition. Contemporary Gond art uses acrylic on canvas while retaining traditional dot-and-dash texture patterns. Dindori district cooperative societies support Gond artists with canvas, acrylic, and exhibition access in Delhi and Mumbai galleries.
