Ganjam Berhampur Turmeric Laccadive Pata Silk Odisha
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Ganjam district in southern Odisha is the production centre of two distinct heritage products: Ganjam turmeric — a deep-orange, high-curcumin variety grown on the Eastern Ghats slopes near Bhanjanagar and Phulbani — and the Berhampur Pata silk saree woven by the Patara community in Berhampur city in a complementary weft technique using silk warp and silk-cotton mixed weft that produces sarees with distinctive floral and geometric woven borders without supplementary zari. Ganjam turmeric receives premium pricing at Guntur market as a curcumin-rich specialty, and exports to Germany, Japan, and the US for pharmaceutical curcumin extraction. Berhampur Pata silk is categorised as an Odisha GI product distinct from Sambalpur Ikat and Cuttack silver filigree. The silk weaving tradition is concentrated in Berhampur's Silk Bazar and Barabati neighbourhoods, with primary weavers' cooperatives under the Odisha State Cooperative Textile Corporation marketing through state emporiums. Ganjam turmeric farmers are organised through the National Medicinal Plants Board for curcumin-grade processing certification.
