Fatehgarh Sahib Sugarcane Gurh Jaggery Making

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Fatehgarh Sahib's Sirhind tehsil lies in Punjab's sugarcane growing zone and village kolhu presses operate from November to February, with farmers pressing autumn-cut cane into juice that is clarified and boiled into golden-brown gur sold at local mandis and distributed as prasad at gurudwaras during religious festivals. The first pressing of gur each season is traditionally offered at the nearest gurudwara before home consumption, connecting agricultural production to Sikh community sharing. Fatehgarh Sahib's gur is considered spiritually significant and is sent as a valued gift in the extended Sikh community.
