Eluru Handloom Carpet and Floor Mat Heritage of West Godavari

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Eluru, the administrative headquarters of West Godavari district, maintains a distinct handloom tradition producing heavy cotton carpets, floor mats, and durries using traditional pit looms. The weaving community — predominantly Padmasali and Devanga weavers — creates both traditional geometric designs and contemporary pattern variants for domestic and export markets. Eluru's carpet-weaving cooperative societies have provided the institutional framework for marketing to government institutions, hotels, and heritage tourism buyers. Traditional design elements include stylised floral motifs and temple border patterns derived from the coastal Andhra temple textile tradition. Eluru carpet weavers were early adopters of natural plant-dyed yarn following the demand from international fair trade buyers seeking chemical-dye-free products.
