Dogri Textile and Embroidery Tradition of Jammu
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Dogri textiles and embroidery are the craft traditions of the Dogra people of the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir, distinct from the Kashmiri textiles of the valley. The Dogri embroidery uses silk and zari (gold thread) in dense surface-work on cotton and silk grounds, producing the phulkari-influenced but distinct Jammu styles. Traditional Dogri weaving produces coarse woollen cloth (pattu) and the distinctive Dogri rumal (head cloth). Women embroider with chain stitch and satin stitch in floral and peacock motifs. The Dogri craft tradition has received less attention than Kashmiri crafts despite its historical depth. The Duggar Art College in Jammu maintains Dogri textile tradition documentation. Contemporary designers have begun incorporating Dogri embroidery into fashion. Jammu state crafts board provides training and market linkage to Dogri artisan cooperatives.
