Dogri Pashmina Shawl Weaving Udhampur Jammu

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

While Kashmiri pashmina from the Valley receives global recognition, the Dogri weaving tradition of Jammu region produces a distinct style of pashmina and wool shawl in Udhampur, Doda, and Ramban districts. Dogri weavers use the same Changthangi goat fibre obtained from Ladakh pastoralists but weave in a different loom tradition with bolder geometric and floral patterns inspired by Dogra Pahari miniature painting motifs. The Dogri shawl differs from Kashmiri sozni or kani shawl in its colour palette — deeper burgundies, forest greens, and saffron borders — and in its use of block-printed supplementary patterns alongside woven motifs. Udhampur weavers combine hand-woven pashmina ground fabric with needle embroidery for the premium collector shawl market. Craft councils in Jammu have worked to document distinct Dogri pattern sets separate from Kashmir weaving styles to build a separate market identity. Cooperative shawl weavers in the Jammu hills supply domestic tourist buyers and craft export houses. The Dogra heritage connection to Dogri textiles gives artisans a strong regional identity story that resonates in the domestic premium handicraft market.
