Blue Pottery Artisans of Dausa Region

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

While Jaipur is the epicentre of blue pottery, several artisan villages in Dausa district maintain satellite workshops producing this distinctive Persian-origin craft. Blue pottery uses quartz stone powder, glass, and multani mitti (fuller's earth) instead of clay, making it non-porous and heat-resistant. The characteristic cobalt-blue and turquoise glaze over white background features floral, bird, and geometric patterns. Artisan families here learned the craft from Jaipur masters and adapted it to produce functional items such as tiles, flowerpots, and tea sets at lower price points for rural and semi-urban markets. The Dausa craft clusters also produce terracotta painted ware using local red clay, an older tradition. Government craft bazaars at district headquarters provide marketing access that individual artisans otherwise lack.
