Marudhamalai Murugan Temple Granite Architecture, Coimbatore

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Marudhamalai Arulmigu Subramanya Swamy temple in Coimbatore, set into a granite hillside at the base of the Nilgiris, is one of Tamil Nadu's most visited Murugan temples. The temple is built into natural cave formations in the granite hillface, with the main sanctum in a rock-cut chamber and mandapams built outward from the cliff face. The Dravidian-style gopurams are clad in polychrome stucco figures. Temple artisans from hereditary Kamsala and Sthapathi families maintain the temple's sculptures and perform renovation (kumbhabhishekam) rituals. The annual Vaikasi Visakam festival draws lakhs of devotees who climb the hill in a kavadi procession. The temple manages a large herbal garden on its hillside landholding, cultivating medicinal plants used in temple rituals.
