Chittoor Mango Orchards and Banganapalli GI Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Chittoor district is India's second-largest mango-producing district, famous for the Banganapalli (Benishan) mango — one of India's most prized mango varieties with a GI tag. The Banganapalli mango's large size, golden-yellow colour, fibreless flesh, and sweet flavour make it a premium product in domestic and export markets. Chittoor's mango orchards on the red sandy loam foothills of the Eastern Ghats benefit from moderate humidity, warm days, and cool nights during the fruiting season (March–June). Traditional mango cultivation in Chittoor involves grafting the desired variety onto seedling rootstocks — a practice perfected over generations. Chittoor's mango export cooperative ships containers of fresh mangoes to Europe, the Gulf, and North America during the season.
