Bhimbetka Prehistoric Rock Art Adivasi Heritage Madhya Pradesh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bhimbetka in Raisen district Madhya Pradesh is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing over 700 rock shelters with prehistoric paintings spanning 30,000 years from Upper Palaeolithic to medieval periods — the largest concentration of prehistoric art in South Asia. The paintings depict hunting scenes, community dances, animals, and geometric symbols in ochre, red, white, and green mineral pigments applied with fingers, bark, and feather brushes on quartzite rock surfaces. The Adivasi communities of the Vindhya Hills surroundings are considered descended from the cave painters. Gond and Baiga cooperative artisans near Obaidullaganj town produce canvas paintings inspired by Bhimbetka imagery for tourist craft markets. MP Tourism cooperative guides trained in archaeological interpretation lead daily visitor tours. Bhimbetka rock art documentary and research cooperative associated with Deccan College Pune coordinates preservation monitoring.
