Lohagarh Fort: Earthen Military Architecture of Bharatpur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Lohagarh (Iron Fort) in Bharatpur town is the only fort in Rajasthan that successfully resisted British sieges, twice in 1803 and 1805. Built by Maharaja Suraj Mal (1707-1763), the fort is unique in being constructed of mud and earthen ramparts rather than stone, making cannon balls lose momentum in the soft walls. Massive double moats surrounded the fort. The earthen ramparts, up to 20 metres wide at the base, absorbed cannon fire that would have shattered stone masonry. Inside, the palace complex features Mughal-influenced marble inlay work, floral painted ceilings, and a remarkable museum of weapons, chariots, and Jat royal regalia. The fort demonstrates an indigenous military engineering solution to artillery warfare that European engineers found bewildering, demonstrating how traditional builders' knowledge could prove superior to contemporary military science.
