Bhadohi Hand-Knotted Carpet Uttar Pradesh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bhadohi (now Sant Ravidas Nagar) district in Uttar Pradesh is the carpet capital of India, along with neighbouring Mirzapur and Varanasi. The Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt produces over 90% of India's hand-knotted carpet exports — roughly USD 1.4 billion annually. Weavers knot wool, silk, or blended yarn around a cotton warp using the Persian (Senneh) or Turkish (Ghiordes) knot, following a graph-paper cartoon (naksha). A fine carpet can have 200–500 knots per square inch. The tradition was introduced by Mughal patronage in the 16th century. The Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) in Bhadohi certifies artisan cooperatives. Bhadohi carpets are GI-certified. The Mirzapur-Bhadohi carpet cluster is also known for dhurries — flat-woven cotton reversible carpets used widely across India.
