Satpura Dense Forest Ecology and Tapti River Origin near Betul
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Betul district forms the southern slope of the Satpura range where rainfall exceeds 1,200 millimetres and forest cover remains among the highest in MP at over 40 percent. The Tapti River originates in Multai, Betul, before flowing west through Maharashtra and Gujarat to the Arabian Sea. Betul teak forests are classified as most dry teak by botanists but transition to moist mixed deciduous in the eastern ranges. Giant squirrels — Ratufa indica — are commonly sighted in Betul forests, an indicator species for intact canopy. Betul forest patch fragmentation by road and agricultural expansion has increased human-wildlife conflict, particularly with leopards raiding poultry. Community forest protection committees patrol buffer zones and document wildlife movement using simple observation protocols. The Tapti headwaters in Betul are considered sacred; cattle grazing near the origin tank is prohibited by local custom.
