Berhampur Pata Silk Saree Cooperative Odisha
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Berhampur in Ganjam district, Odisha, produces Berhampur pata silk sarees with distinctive zari border and bold floral-geometric body patterns woven on throw-shuttle handlooms by Meher weaver communities. The silk yarn is locally reeled from multivoltine silkworm cocoons grown in Ganjam and dyed in turmeric yellow, indigo, and madder red. Berhampur pata sarees are gifted at weddings across Odisha and AP coastal communities. Cooperative weavers are organised under Berhampore Handloom Weavers Industrial Cooperative Society, one of the oldest in Odisha. State emporium Utkalika and private buyers from Cuttack purchase cooperative output. GI tag for Berhampur pata is under examination. Weavers face competition from power-loom copies produced in Surat but retain premium market for handloom-certified sarees.
