Barpeta Satra Sattriya Dance Drama Assam

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Barpeta in the Barpeta district of Assam is one of the most important centres of Sattriya classical dance, the eighth classical dance form of India institutionalised by the Vaishnava saint reformer Srimanta Sankardeva in the 16th century within Assam satra monastery institutions. Barpeta Satra is among the most prestigious of Assam living monasteries, maintaining the Sattriya dance, drama, and music traditions within a community of monk-dancer-scholars called bhokots. Sattriya combines precise footwork, fluid hand gestures mudra, and devotional Vaishnava narrative themes drawn from Krishna and Rama mythology. Women have been admitted to Sattriya training in recent decades after the tradition was historically male-only within monastery walls. The Sangeet Natak Akademi recognises Sattriya alongside Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Odissi. Cooperative cultural societies in Barpeta support dance training for local youth and organise annual Sattriya festival performances attracting scholars and performers from across India.
