Castor Oil Cultivation in Banaskantha: Gujarat's Industrial Crop

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Banaskantha district is India's largest castor oil (Ricinus communis) producing zone, contributing significantly to India's global leadership in castor oil exports (85% of world production). Castor is grown as a kharif crop on the well-drained sandy loam soils of Banaskantha, sown in June-July and harvested in 4-5 months. The GCH-4 and GCH-5 hybrid varieties are widely grown for high seed oil content. Castor oil has hundreds of industrial applications: lubricants, cosmetics, plastics, paints, and pharmaceuticals. Traditional uses include castor oil as a laxative, lamp fuel, and leather conditioner. The seeds are highly toxic (containing ricin) and handling requires care; women do pod-collection work while men operate the threshers. NRCCS (National Research Centre for Castor) based in Anantapur coordinates variety development. Banaskantha's Deesa town is a major castor seed trading and processing hub.
