Balangir Sonepur Kosali Handloom Weaving Odisha

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Balangir and Sonepur districts of western Odisha are part of the Kosali handloom belt producing Sambalpuri ikat sarees, cotton towels, and dress material woven by Bhulia and Meher cooperative weaver societies. The Kosali weaving tradition differs from eastern Odia weaving in its preference for bold Bandha ikat double-resist patterning on thicker cotton thread, producing a heavier fabric suited to western Odisha warm dry climate. Cooperative weaver societies in Titilagarh and Kantabanji supply cotton yarn from Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra mills and sell finished fabric to the Odisha state handloom corporation. Women in Bhulia families learn weaving from childhood and contribute the intricate tying work for ikat resist sections while men manage the loom. Balangir is also a significant source of seasonal migrant labour from adivasi communities to brick kilns and construction sites in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, making cooperative income supplementation critical for household welfare.
