Sirpur Heritage Temple Complex and Buddhist Architecture, Adilabad

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Sirpur heritage complex in Adilabad district contains early medieval temples and a large Buddhist monastery (7th–8th century CE) that represent exceptional architectural achievements of the Sarabhapuriya and early Chalukya periods. The Lakshmana temple at Sirpur — built entirely from brick except for the carved sandstone doorframe — is one of the best-preserved early brick temples in the Deccan. The Buddhist vihara complex at Sirpur, excavated from the 1950s onwards, includes residential cells, a stupa, and artefacts indicating active connections with the Buddhist trade networks of central India. The discovery of a large Buddha figure in copper alloy at Sirpur confirmed the site's importance as a Buddhist monastic centre.
