Warli Tribal Painting — Palghar Maharashtra
Contributed by System
Warli painting is the folk art of the Warli tribal community in Palghar (Thane) district of Maharashtra. Traditionally drawn on mud walls with rice paste and ochre, Warli paintings depict daily life scenes — harvesting, fishing, hunting, dancing, and nature — using a geometric vocabulary of circles, triangles, and lines. Now done on paper, canvas, and fabric for commercial markets. GI-tagged. The tarpa dance — a community circle dance — is the most iconic motif. Artists like Jivya Soma Mashe brought Warli to global galleries. Tribal cooperative markets and Tribes India network distribute Warli products.
