Terai Arc Landscape: Biodiversity Corridor

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Udham Singh Nagar lies within the Terai Arc Landscape, one of the world's most biodiverse regions connecting forest patches from the Shivalik Hills to the Gangetic plains. Jim Corbett National Park's buffer zones and the Surai Range forests within the district support tigers, elephants, leopards, and hundreds of bird species. The bhabar-terai ecosystem transitions from Himalayan foothills through mixed forests to grasslands hosting rhinoceros in nearby areas. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining wildlife corridors between fragmented forest patches allowing animal migration. Traditional Tharu community knowledge of forest resources and wildlife behaviour contributes to community-based conservation programs.
