Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary Pithoragarh Himalaya
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Askot Wildlife Sanctuary in Pithoragarh district at elevations between 1200 and 3600 metres protects the endangered Himalayan Musk Deer along with Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, and diverse bird species. Traditional knowledge of Van Gujjar and local Bhotiya community regarding wildlife habits, seasonal movements, and habitat preferences contributes to conservation management. Musk has been an important commodity in traditional medicine and perfumery; knowledge of sustainable non-lethal musk extraction methods helps protect populations. The sanctuary's oak-rhododendron forests at middle elevations and alpine meadows above the tree line represent complete Himalayan vertical zonation. Community forest protection committees manage peripheral zones integrating livelihood and conservation objectives.
