Chitai Golu Devta Temple and Justice Tradition Almora

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Chitai Golu Devta temple near Almora is famous across Kumaon as a deity of justice where petitioners write letters describing their legal grievances and attach them with bells to the temple premises. Golu Devta (identified as a form of Lord Shiva or as a historical king elevated to divine status) is believed to grant justice to the wronged. The temple is draped with hundreds of thousands of bells, letters, stamps, and notes from devotees. This unique petitioning tradition reflects the traditional judicial function of deity worship in Kumaoni society where divine arbitration supplemented formal legal systems. The practice continues actively with modern petitioners sending registered letters and even email notifications to the temple.
