Tripura Natural Rubber Plantation Tribal Cooperative

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Tripura is the second-largest natural rubber producing state in India after Kerala, with over 75,000 hectares of Hevea brasiliensis plantation predominantly operated by small tribal farmers in the hill districts of Gomati, Sipahijala, and Dhalai. Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) cooperative rubber societies manage latex collection, coagulation, and sheet rolling from tribal member plantation holdings of 1-3 hectares per family. Tripura rubber cooperative federations supply sheet rubber to Rubber Board-affiliated processing units in Agartala and directly to tyre and industrial rubber product companies. The Tripura rubber programme has lifted thousands of Tripuri, Reang, and Jamatia tribal families above the poverty line since the 1980s plantation expansion. Cooperative nurseries supply grafted Hevea planting material to new cooperative members under the National Rubber Mission subsidy scheme.
