Sundargarh Rourkela Steel Tribal Agaria Iron Smelting
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Sundargarh district in north Odisha hosts Rourkela Steel Plant — one of India's first integrated steel plants (1959), built in collaboration with German firm Krupp-Demag on the Brahmani river — alongside iron ore mines in the Sundargarh plateau that feed the steel plant. The district's Agaria tribal community (originally from Chhattisgarh and MP) practised indigenous iron smelting using furnaces that pre-date the steel plant by centuries, and their hereditary metallurgical knowledge is documented by anthropologists as evidence of tribal iron technology traditions in the Chotanagpur plateau. Sundargarh's Sundergarh plateau forests shelter significant tribal populations — Oraon, Munda, Kharia, Ho — whose culture of Karma festival music, tribal cooperative farming, and forest rights is distinct from the Odishan coastal tradition.
