Jodipat Palm Leaf Manuscript Writing Tradition of Srikakulam
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Srikakulam district preserves one of the last living traditions of Jodipat — the art of writing on palm leaf manuscripts using a metal stylus (kalam) to incise letters into dried palmyra palm leaf strips. The inscribed grooves are then rubbed with lamp black or turmeric to make the letters visible. The tradition was the primary medium of literary, astrological, and medical knowledge preservation in coastal Andhra for over 1,500 years. Jyotish (astrology) practitioners, Sanskrit scholars, and hereditary scribes (known as Josyudu families) maintain Jodipat writing skills in Srikakulam. The district's manuscript libraries, maintained by private families and the Andhra Pradesh Government Oriental Manuscripts Library, hold tens of thousands of palm leaf texts awaiting digitisation.
