Sirohi Mount Abu Dilwara Jain Temple Marble Architecture
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Sirohi district in southern Rajasthan contains Mount Abu — Rajasthan's only hill station (1,220 metres) and the site of the Dilwara Jain temples (1031-1232 CE), considered the finest example of marble architecture in the world where every surface, column, and ceiling is intricately carved in white marble to a fineness that makes individual marble carvings appear translucent. The Dilwara Vimala Vasahi temple's ceiling medallions and corridor pillars represent the pinnacle of Jain sacred architecture commissioned by Solanki dynasty ministers and merchants. Sirohi's marble quarrying and handicraft tradition provides the stone for Dilwara-style temple replicas and decorative stonework sold at heritage markets across Rajasthan.
